I got some of the joke, which is often worse than getting none of it. I didn't realise, for example, the significance of "next Tuesday", which if I'm right will be a year since Higgs predicted the discovery of "his" boson "within a year".

Mind you, even having discovered the various levels, I don't think it's all that funny a strip. Even by xkcd standards, it's trying too hard and just comes across as "Hey, look how clever I am!" rather than actual humour.

There may be yet another level.  In his title= attribute, Randall talks about *he* is the stupidest one who doesn't get jokes like this.  I had thought that the use of "excitation" rather than "boson" was just mean, deliberately making the joke harder to grasp without making it funnier in the least—unless what what the comic is "really" talking about is Higgs excitability, the tendency of a certain physicist whose boson didn't get discovered to go ballistic and thus the need to defend oneself against him using projectile weapons?
