It's a scam.  The parents are expected to prepay for sub-master cartons of cookies, then get rid of them any way they can, such as booth sales at convenience stores, direct sales to office mates, etc.  Girls vary widely in how much actual sales help they provide at booth sales, but the parents do much of it.  For the office sales the girls are present in name only. Boy Scouts are now doing exactly the same thing, only with popcorn.

I suppose "Girl Guide" rolls off the tongue if you grew up with it, just like "gutter" seems more à propos to the formed sheet-metal object than "eavestrough", if that's what you always heard.

Luckily, my pro-Girl Scout wife has encountered The Little Girl With Zero Interest In Girl Scouting who also keeps her way too busy to think about volunteering in a local troop.
