I was led to this den of error from this article on the decline and fall of the USA, which contains a photo with this flag in it from the Jan 6 insurrection.  That led me to this Quora article, which contains a quote from ChatGPT:

But when I tried that pair of questions myself with ChatGPT, it told me that these flags are “typically associated with maritime signaling and represent the letter 'N' in the International Code of Signals.”  (The maritime signalling flag for 'N' is actually a blue checkerboard.)
